Kohl's to close 27 'underperforming' stores by April. Here's the list

Kohl’s plans to close 27 of its underperforming stores by April 2025 as part of the struggling retailer’s transformation process.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-headquartered company – pressured by declining sales – said that all employees at the closing stores “have been informed, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s,” according to a Jan. 9 press release.

“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the company said.

Also closing: an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, in operation since 2010, shuttering in May 2025. The company can now fulfill customer orders from store locations, without the fulfillment center, Kohl’s said.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will step down as CEO on Jan. 15. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Ashley Buchanan, formerly CEO of Michaels Companies, will take over as Kohl’s CEO on Jan. 15. Kingsbury will remain on as an advisor and serve on the company’s board through his retirement in May 2025.

Kohl’s said in November 2024 it expects 2024 sales to be down 7% to 8%. The retailer reports its full-year sales in February.

Kohl’s plans to close 27 stores by April 2025. That will leave the retailer with more than 1,120 locations.

  • Balboa (San Diego): 5505 Balboa Ave.

  • Encinitas: 134 N El Camino Real

  • Fremont: 43782 Christy St.

  • Mountain View: 350 Showers Dr.

  • Napa: 1116 1st St.

  • Pleasanton: 4525 Rosewood Dr.

  • Point West (Sacramento): 1896 Arden Way

  • San Rafael: 5010 Northgate Dr.

  • San Luis Obispo: 205 Madonna Rd.

  • Westchester: 8739 S Sepulveda Blvd.
