One person killed another airlifted to hospital after crash on I-26, SC cops say

One person was killed Wednesday night and another was injured in a crash on Interstate 26, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened on a stretch of I-26 running through Calhoun County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt.

Both a 2021 Toyota SUV and a 2017 Ford sedan were driving west on I-26, according to Bolt. At the 135 mile marker, the Toyota was slowing for traffic when the Ford hit it in the rear and the SUV driver died, Bolt said.

The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Toyota driver.

A passenger in the Toyota was airlifted by helicopter to an area hospital, according to Bolt. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.

Bolt said the driver, who was the only person in the Ford, was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 785 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least four people have died in Calhoun County crashes in 2024, according to DPS data.
