President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration will be moved indoors on Monday.
The change is due to “dangerously cold temperatures,” and the event will now be held inside the Capitol Rotunda.
“It is my obligation to protect the People of our Country but, before we even begin, we have to think of the Inauguration itself,” Trump posted to Truth Social.
Extremely cold temperatures and strong winds are expected on Monday, with the D.C. weather forecasts hinting at the coldest inauguration in 40 years.
“There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country. I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way,” Trump continued. “It is dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of Law Enforcement, First Responders, Police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on the 20th (In any event, if you decide to come, dress warmly!).”
The last time a swearing-in happened inside was Ronald Reagan’s inauguration in 1985, where temperatures hit 7 degrees. That was the last time the weather compared to Monday’s forecast on Inauguration Day.
The presidential parade and live viewing of the swearing-in ceremony will take place at Capital One Arena, where Trump will join after the inauguration.
