No. 16 Utah will be in Tempe for a Big 12 matchup against Arizona State on Friday night, and there remains uncertainty around the status of starting quarterback Cam Rising. The Utes star hasn’t played since Week 2 against Baylor, and the offense has been limited as a result.
Utah is coming off a bye week, which was badly needed after it fell to Arizona on Sept. 28. Quarterback Isaac Wilson continued to struggle in relief of Rising, completing just 50% of his throws for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. As a result, the Utes suffered their first loss of the season, 23-10.
The rushing attack didn’t provide much help as Utah rushed for 84 yards on 29 attempts. Someone on Utah’s offense will have to get going in order to avoid a second straight upset.
Arizona State is coming off a key win over Kansas last weekend, and the ground game was on fire in that one. Sun Devils running back Cam Skattebo racked up 182 rushing yards and a touchdown while quarterback Sam Leavitt added 77 yards rushing of his own.
The Sun Devils probably won’t be able to do that kind of damage against a tough Utah defense, but that rushing attack might help them control the game against a Utes team that may be without its starting quarterback for the fourth straight game.
